Background
According to the World Bank data on poverty level in Liberia, 50.9% of the country’s population lives below the national poverty line. Approximately 2.3 million of the nation’s population are unable to meet their basic consumable and non-consumable needs. The poverty level is report to be higher in rural areas by 71.7% compared to 68% of the total population.
According to UNESCO and the World Bank statistics, the adult literacy rate in Liberia is 48.3%; thereby computing the illiteracy rate of 51.7%. Furthermore, the recent demographic and health survey reported that 34% of Liberian women have no formal education compared to 13% men who have no formal education. There are also political factors such as systemic corruption across major and minor government administration and offices that suppresses chances of humanitarian and international efforts to help alleviate the over-all welfare crisis that continues to devastate majority of Liberians.
Our History
Ma-Juah Foundation was founded October 21, 2022, and is dedicated to promoting literacy, medical welfare, economic and social development, and other training skills to help boost self-sufficiency of mainly women and children. The organization has done it’s own in person evaluations of poverty stricken communities and found a staggering number of young single mothers and widows struggling to survive daily under deplorable conditions that are unimaginable. The major crisis that threatens their survivability are the lack of habitable shelters, lack of food and clean drinking water, lack of healthcare facilities, and the lack of education. People in these communities are almost completely marginalized socially and economically. The organization is determine to meet more than just the basic needs of the people within thees communities across the entire nation one project at a time in hope to facilitate changes that are pivotal to their overall welfare reformation.
Meet The Founders
Marie Sleyon
Marie is the CEO and founder of Ma-Juah Foundation. She hails from Liberia, West Africa where She spent several years contributing to orphanages and working as a volunteer. In the United States, Marie has worked in the health sector and working with people with disabilities has been her passion. Before founding Ma-Juah Foundation, Marie made several meaningful contributions to students in elementary, high school, and colleges in West Africa.
Charles Sleyon
Amb Charles Sleyon, a Co-founder of Ma-Juah Foundation is a Liberian philanthropist, Humanitarian, and a multi-award winning gospel minister. He’s also a business man, and currently owns several businesses in the United States of America and Liberia. Amb. Charles believes in sharing and has been able to put smiles on the faces of people to the Glory of GOD. He’s currently donating up to 75% of his business proceeds to Ma-Juah Foundation to enable the foundation execute more humanitarian projects around the world.
